Silver Cross Hospital and the Joliet JackHammers are teaming up to fight illiteracy in the nearby community! We are going to collect new and gently used children’s books throughout the JackHammers 2010 baseball season. Our goal is to collect at least 1,000 books by the end of the season.
All proceeds will benefit the National Hook-up of Black Women (NHBW) and Silver Cross Reading Room. The Reading Room provides young children with the opportunity to read and experience books, while simultaneously increasing their literacy levels.
If you would like to donate a book, bring it to the Silver Cross kiosk that will be inside the JackHammers ballpark. Those who donate one or more books will receive a redeemable voucher that is good for two tickets at the price of one for a Joliet JackHammers home game. They will also be entered into a raffle with a chance to win an Amazon Kindle, an appearance by Jammer (the JackHammers’ mascot), and other various prizes.
There will be another opportunity to donate books at our Celebration of Health, which takes place on June 18. If you donate a book at this event, you will receive $10 off of a heart screening. What would be a $40 screening gets knocked down to $30!
Family, friends and fans, we encourage you to donate your children’s books in order help benefit a worthwhile cause! Through your generous donations you will help us increase children’s literacy levels and provide them with a sense of empowerment for their future.

When, and how frequently, you should get a bone density screening depends on your age, risk factors, and whether you’ve already been diagnosed with thinning bones.
In recognition of national Osteoporosis Month, the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health is providing discounted bone density screenings for osteoporosis on Tuesday, May 18, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. You can get more information on the screenings from the ‘Events’ section in the sidebar to the right.
A bone density scan can detect thinning bones at an early stage. If you already have osteoporosis, bone scans can also tell you how fast the disease is progressing. Generally, anyone at risk for osteoporosis should get a bone density scan.
Postmenopausal women are at highest risk, because estrogen preserves bone strength. But when should you get an osteoporosis screening and bone scan? Read further
With Mother’s Day this weekend, we thought some of you may be looking for last-minute ideas to make the day a great celebration. So we’ve put together a few healthy options for you to enjoy the day, either with the family or on your own—however you’d like! After all, it’s your day!
Visit the Brookfield Zoo. (Cookie the Cockatoo pictured at right) This weekend the Great Bear Wilderness exhibit opens, complete with a prairie setting for the bison and a “bison bunker,” bear yards 3 times the space of their old exhibit, and underwater viewing of the polar bears. A visit to the zoo means the opportunity to get the easiest kind of exercise—walking for a few hours without even realizing the calories you burn as you go.
Plant a vegetable garden. If you’ve got garden space, now’s a great time to put together a great vegetable garden. Kids will likely enjoy the project, and perhaps the your kids and their dad will do most of the work as you supervise. Then your family can enjoy the “fruits” of your effort into the fall.
Take a hike. It’s always great to get out and enjoy the fresh air and good weather in a beautiful setting. Try the Pilcher Park Loop for a fun 3 mile walk, which has a few “bailout” options if you’re bringing the kids along. Your kids will also love the nature center, where they can see turtles, snakes, birds, and fish.
Enjoy a healthy picnic. Picnics are great because they involve minimum prep work and you don’t have to cook if you don’t want to. Put together an assortment of fruits, breads and cheeses, and enjoy some time eating outdoors. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, don’t let that hinder your plans. Clear some space and throw the picnic blanket down indoors!
Schedule your mammogram. Okay, this one seems out of the blue, but one of the best ways you can take care of your family is to take care of yourself. And a lot of people use landmark days during the year to remember to schedule this important annual exam, as it may otherwise be easy to forget. So if you use your birthday or Mother’s Day, you can remember each year around that day to make your appointment. Schedule it at the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, at our new facility in New Lenox, a soothing, spa-like environment that offers a variety of healthcare services designed around a woman’s needs and lifestyle. And you deserve the best! To request an appointment, just follow the link below. Have a great Mother’s Day!
