Silver Cross Founders Support Hospital’s Mission with Donation

Will County Union of King’s Daughters and Sons’ members Sue Gonzalez and Karla Farr present Larry Johnson , Vice President of the Foundation at Silver Cross Hospital, with a check for $5,000 for Silver Cross’ inpatient dialysis services.

Recently, the Will County Union of King’s Daughters and Sons presented Silver Cross with $5,000 for the hospital’s inpatient dialysis services. The funds were raised through Trunk Shows and a Craft Fair will be used to purchase a peritoneal dialysis machine and replacement equipment.

Founded in 1890, the Union continues to support the dream and project started by a small group of local women over a century ago-to build Silver Cross Hospital. Today, the Union is comprised of 52 men and women in 4 circles.

The International Order of King’s Daughters and Sons is the founding organization of Silver Cross Hospital. The order was founded in New York City in 1886 by a small group of women with a desire to help others. It is one of the oldest Christian service organizations in the United States. Word of the organization quickly spread, and circles were established from coast to coast and even overseas. A circle of young ladies was established in Joliet, Illinois. Seeing a need for a hospital in the area, the members worked diligently to plan and build this hospital. The land was even donated by one of the members. The sign of the King’s Daughters is a silver Maltese cross, and they named their hospital Silver Cross. The building was dedicated in 1895, and the Union has continued to support various hospital initiatives including inpatient dialysis services.

There are three active adult circles in Will County and one junior circle. The junior circle offers a fine opportunity for young people to learn about volunteering. Members meet monthly to work on projects and to share Bible study, devotions and fellowship. Board members of the Will County Union’s Branch include New Lenox resident Rita Larson; Joliet resident Karla Farr (Co-Presidents); Joliet residents Linda Emmert and Peggy Parthun, (Co-Vice Presidents); Plainfield resident Karen Colombo, (Secretary); and Lockport resident Sue Gonzalez (Treasurer).
