Silver Cross Hospital Receives Four Women’s Choice Awards®
Silver Cross Hospital has earned four Women’s Choice Awards for 2018: America’s Best Patient Safety, America’s Best Bariatric Surgery, America’s Best Obstetrics and America’s Best Heart Care. This is the third year in a row Silver Cross has earned top marks for patient safety and bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, and it’s the second year running the hospital has received awards for its heart and obstetrics programs.
The Women’s Choice Award was designed to empower every woman to make smarter healthcare choices by providing publicly available reporting on the best hospitals. Understanding that women make nearly 90 percent of the healthcare decisions for their families, Women’s Choice is the only recognition that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that considers female patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
“We’re honored to be recognized by the Women’s Choice Awards for the third year in a row,” said Ruth Colby, President and CEO of Silver Cross Hospital. “We’re especially proud of our patient safety distinction. Keeping patients safe is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why our entire team works tirelessly to measure, review and improve our performance every single day.”
America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety
According to Women’s Choice, recipients of the America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety have led the country by implementing practices that have saved lives through safe surgery procedures and low rates of complications and infections, based on data reported for 11 different factors.
Recognized hospitals must also use an inpatient safe surgery checklist to assess effective communication and safe practices during three peri-operative periods: prior to administering anesthesia; prior to skin incision; and prior to the patient leaving the operating room or procedural area.
The award demonstrates that Silver Cross is in the top 16 percent of more than 3,100 U.S. hospitals for patient safety. What’s more, Silver Cross is one of only 19 hospitals in Illinois – and the only one in Will and Grundy counties – to earn the distinction.
America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery
Hospitals like Silver Cross that earn the 2018 America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery Award have met the high standards of The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). In addition, recognized hospitals received a patient recommendation rating above the national average on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
As a MBSAQIP-accredited center and a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery, Silver Cross Hospital’s distinguished program includes BMI Surgery’s renowned bariatric surgeons, who perform the latest and safest bariatric surgical procedures including laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, revisional bariatric surgery and gastric balloon placement.
America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics
The America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics scoring process is unique in that it is the only national list that is evidence-based and focuses on female patient satisfaction. Awarded hospitals, including Silver Cross, ranked above the national average for patient recommendations, as indicated by the data reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in HCAHPS surveys. Additional considerations included having a neonatal intensive care unit on-site, low rates of early elective deliveries, as well as ranking above the national average for patient safety.
With cutting-edge medical technology and spa-like amenities, Silver Cross makes the birthing experience a memorable one. The Birthing Center at the New Lenox hospital has 12 luxurious birthing suites designed for labor, delivery and recovery so parents can have the convenience of staying in the same room through recovery, followed by a stay in one of 30 private mother-baby suites. And for deliveries requiring surgery, there are three complete cesarean suites. The hospital’s nursery is designated as a Level 2 extended care, and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital neonatologists and pediatric hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If needed, Lurie Children’s pediatric cardiologists are available to analyze a baby’s echocardiogram in real time through a video linkage with Silver Cross.
America’s Best Hospitals for Heart Care
The America’s Best Hospitals for Heart Care distinction signifies that the cardiovascular care provided by Silver Cross heart and vascular experts is in the country’s top nine percent of hospitals offering heart care services, based on measures of mortality and readmission as reported to Medicare, and high HCAHPS recommendation scores.
