Silver Cross Hospital Recognized for Higher Quality in Maternity Care
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) has recognized Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, IL with a Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care designation as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated hospitals that show expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community.
Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization, and cesarean sections the most common operating room procedures, according to National Centers for Health Statistics and the Agency for Health care Research & Quality (AHRQ). Reducing early elective delivery is an area of focus for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). According to Health Affairs, elective inductions result in more cesarean deliveries and a longer maternal hospitalization. The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on quality measures for vaginal and cesarean delivery.
“Choosing where to have a baby is a major decision,” said Silver Cross President Ruth Colby. “I’m proud to say that when expectant families choose Silver Cross, they can be confident they’re receiving care that meets the highest standards for quality, safety and outcomes. In fact, that’s why we’ve earned the Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care designation – and it’s also why we deliver more than 3,000 babies every year. Thank you to our entire team for helping us earn this prestigious honor.”
Silver Cross has brought together cutting-edge medical technology with spa-like amenities to make the birthing experience all the more memorable. The Birthing Center at Silver Cross Hospital has 12 luxurious birthing suites designed for labor, delivery and recovery so parents can have the convenience of staying in the same room through recovery followed by a stay in one of 30 private mother-baby suites.
Each private suite is fully-equipped with a bathroom with a shower and immersion tub to help with labor pains, blanket warmer, refrigerator, wireless internet access, flat screen DirectTV system, and a comfortable sofa-sleeper so family members can stay around the clock. And for deliveries requiring surgery, there are three complete cesarean suites. Silver Cross’ Nursery is designated as a Level 2E and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital neonatologists and pediatric hospitalists are onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And if needed, Lurie Children’s pediatric cardiologists are available to analyze a baby’s echocardiogram in real time through a video linkage with Silver Cross.
“Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is proud to offer this recognition to Silver Cross highlighting our commitment to quality outcomes for our members,” said Stephanie Vomvouras, MD MBA FACP, Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies across the nation have recognized more than 1,000 hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care. Hospitals recognized with this designation are assessed using a combination of quality information supplied by hospitals and cost measures derived from BCBS companies’ medical claims.
Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, maternity care, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery and transplants, while encouraging health care professionals to improve the care they deliver. Research shows that, compared to other hospitals, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients.
