Specialist Spotlight: Fighting Cancer One Patient at a Time
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a difficult experience for anyone to encounter. You want a physician who is at the forefront of medicine’s most current cancer treatments. On the Silver Cross Hospital campus in New Lenox, IL, Anne McCall, M.D., a renowned radiation oncologist with more than 30 years of experience, has been caring for patients and teaching other physicians on the latest techniques in the fight against cancer.
Dr. McCall’s practice is based at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital where patients receive the expertise and investigational therapies of The University of Chicago Medicine in a convenient community setting.
She is an expert in radiation oncology, specializing in the treatment of breast and gynecologic cancers and lymphoma. She uses the leading-edge TrueBeam™ system to deliver external beam radiation. This innovative technology is highly accurate — allowing for faster, more comfortable treatment while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. She has extensive experience with the state-of-the-art prone breast radiation technique.
“Prone therapy is especially beneficial for women with larger breasts and a tumor that hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes,” said Dr. McCall. “The dose of radiation is uniform with less skin reaction. There is minimal exposure to the heart and lungs, which lowers the risk of complications, such as future heart disease and lung damage.” The department also has VisionRT and deep inspiration breath holding, which prevents radiation to the heart and lung in women with breast cancer who need treatment to their lymph nodes.
“By coming to The University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross, patients have access to the same advanced technology that is offered at the University of Chicago Medicine at Hyde Park in downtown Chicago,” said Dr. McCall. “We are fortunate to have highly trained and experienced radiation therapists, nurses and physicists working at Silver Cross who make all our patients’ treatment so successful. Our department is a place where patients are surrounded by people who truly care about them.”
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. McCall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology at The University of Chicago Medicine. She is interested in translational research — the process by which discoveries made in the lab are brought to patient populations. She also has a strong interest in cost-benefit analyses, including the economic impact of shorter radiation regimens for patients diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Dr. McCall loves teaching, and was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 2014.
Dr. McCall is regularly named one of the “Best Doctors in America” by Best Doctors, Inc. She is active in several administrative committees at Silver Cross, including the Medical Executive Committee. She graduated from Rush University Medical College in 1983, followed by her residency in radiation oncology at Loyola University Medical Center, in Maywood, Illinois. She and her husband, Richard, have four adult children and live in Chicago.
