Specialist Spotlight: Making an Impact on Patients Lives
Having a heart attack is a scary experience for anyone. For nearly 30 years, Abdul Sankari, MD, interventional cardiologist, has enjoyed making an impact on his patients’ lives by helping them with a “second chance” at life after a heart attack. “Collaborating with my patients is a truly special event that I am blessed to experience on a daily basis,” says Dr. Sankari. “This experience creates an unbreakable bond between my patients and myself.”
Dr. Sankari states he treats every patient the same way he would treat a member of his immediate family. “I have a very close relationship with my patients,” states Dr. Sankari, a member of the Silver Cross Hospital medical staff. “I try to ease their fears and assure them that I will always be there for them. The vast majority of my patients get to know me on a professional as well as personal level; we talk about our hobbies and our families just like friends.”
He also tells his patients their doctor – patient relationship is a partnership. “We try to make the best decisions based on their preferences,” says Dr. Sankari. “We then formulate a treatment plan which may vary significantly from one patient to another. That part, the art of medicine, is what I enjoy most.”
Another partnership that Dr. Sankari enjoys is collaborating with physicians to provide advanced care to patients. Over the next two years, Dr. Sankari will represent the Silver Cross Medical Staff – now more than 800 members strong, as Chief of Staff working side by side with the Hospital’s Board of Directors, leadership team, employees, volunteers and his physician colleagues to deliver the very best care in the safest manner by the friendliest people.
“I am excited to work with my fellow physician colleagues and the staff at Silver Cross Hospital to improve the quality of life for our patients,” adds Dr. Sankari.
As an exemplary leader, Dr. Sankari is often described as an expert in his field who handles challenges with grace. In addition, his down-to-earth demeanor allows his peers to easily approach him knowing he will take the time to sincerely understand their concerns. These characteristics will certainly serve him well in his new role as Chief of Staff at Silver Cross Hospital.
“We are fortunate that highly skilled physicians like Dr. Sankari are committed to making Silver Cross a better place to receive care,” said Ruth Colby, President and CEO of Silver Cross Hospital.
Dr. Sankari is the president of Heartland Cardiovascular Center—now part of DuPage Medical Group. Board Certified in interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, critical care medicine, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine, he received his medical degree from the University of Aleppo, Syria, where he earned the First Rank in the Graduation Exam at the University of Aleppo. Dr. Sankari completed his internship and residency at the University of Illinois, Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, where he was the Chief Medical Resident.
