Specialist Spotlight: Women Caring for Women
Family Medicine physicians Roseann Horan, M.D., and Marie Veldman, D.O., truly enjoy caring for women. So much so that collectively for the past 38 years they have dedicated their medical practice solely to managing the comprehensive healthcare needs of women through all stages of life beginning at age 16. Over the years, they have found that many of their patients feel more comfortable seeking medical care from a female primary care physician.
“We certainly have the advantage of intimately understanding the health concerns of women,” states Dr. Veldman. “We also share many kinds of life experiences that are unique to women. In fact between the two of us we have 9 children so we can definitely relate to many of our patients.”
Dr. Horan adds, “Since women have distinctive needs and experiences, we have a deep desire to make our patients feel at ease and comfortable talking to us about any problem they are encountering.
Although the two doctors have a similar practice style and philosophy, their areas of interest vary. Dr. Horan specializes in holistic medicine, menopause, thyroid disease, contraception, and STD education and prevention for young women. She offers her patients an entire array of healthcare services, including primary gynecologic care like endometrial biopsies, colposcopies and IUD insertions. For the past 20 years, she has been providing care for hypertension, diabetes, orthopedic and thyroid problems, minor dermatological issues, and many other general medical conditions. Dr. Horan believes in arming her patients with the knowledge to help them live the best life they can live.
With more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Veldman has a particular interest in preventative health, nutrition, fitness, gynecology, and menopause. She has vast experience treating diabetes, hypertension, orthopedic and rheumatologic conditions, as well as depression and anxiety. She has special training in endometrial biopsy, colposcopy, loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP), minor surgeries and joint injections. She believes in working together with her patients in making important decisions about their health. She is dedicated to providing the best possible primary health care to women in a warm, welcoming and respectful setting.
Making Good Choices Key to Wellness Success
Both physicians strongly encourage their patients to follow preventative health behaviors.
“The key to wellness is staying active with exercise and eating a healthy diet,” states Dr. Horan. “I advise my patients to make an appointment with me to address their questions and to help clarify any information they find on the internet or hear in the news media. Further, I adhere to preventive service guidelines for pap smears, mammography, colon cancer screening, cholesterol and diabetes. However, I am willing to discuss these guidelines and tailor them to my patients’ own concerns and history.”
Dr. Veldman offers a few additional tips for women on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “I first recommend quitting smoking for anyone who smokes, as this is probably the single best thing a smoker can do to improve her quality of life and longevity. Additionally, which may be the most difficult thing to do of all, is to learn how to manage your stress and reduce harmful levels of stress.”
